Comedies to learn Spanish

Updated: Dec 14, 2023

From Blabla Olé we propose to watch movies to learn Spanish, whether you are following a Spanish course or not.

Films and, in general, audiovisual media, are fundamental resources in the teaching of Spanish for many reasons, among which we can highlight:

  • Improves listening comprehension

  • Helps to recognize paralinguistic elements (such as emphasis or tone) and extralinguistic elements (such as body language)

  • Effective communication requires knowledge of cultural components such as customs, values and beliefs that are evident in audiovisual production and, above all, in comedy in which many of these aspects are often underlined or ridiculed.

  • Improve communicative competence, that is, the ability to use the language you are studying in an effective way.

And besides, you are going to have fun.

Here is a review of five of my favorites, as well as links to the trailers.

OCHO APELLIDOS VASCOS

(EIGHT BASQUE SURNAMES)

This film is a romantic comedy in which the most sympathetic stereotypes of two Spanish regions appear: The Basque Country and Andalusia.

The film tells the love story of Rafa, a young man from Seville, who tries to win over Amaya, a Basque girl. Rafa and Amaya are two very different people, but will love triumph over everything else?

MUJERES AL BORDE DE UN ATAQUE DE NERVIOS

(WOMEN ON THE BRINK OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN)

We are now going to a classic Spanish movie. Who does not know Pedro Almodóvar? And Antonio Banderas? Here you have a very young Antonio Banderas, in his early days, directed by Pedro Almodóvar. But in this movie the protagonists are women, and what a woman! You will not be able to stop laughing in this comedy in which Pepa, a young woman who is separated from her husband, begins to live a very extravagant story that is different from her reality.

CAMPEONES

(CHAMPIONS)

The protagonist goes from being a professional basketball coach to training a group of kids with intellectual disabilities. A hilarious and sweet comedy that can change the way you think about disability.

Without a doubt, you will fall in love with all its characters!

PRIMOS

(COUSINS)

What would you do if your partner leaves you five days before your wedding? This is the beginning of this funny comedy that tells the story of Diego, who has just been abandoned, and decides to go to a party in his town with two cousins. How will this party end? Will there be a wedding finally?

PADRE NO HAY MAS QUE UNO

(FATHER THERE IS NO MORE THAN ONE9

Taking care of five children without knowing how to do it? This is what this comedy tells. Javier, a father who has not taken care of the house and his children much, has to organize himself and face this reality when his wife decides to go on a trip and leave him alone with them.
